‘The Event’ pulls in $50,000 for American Cancer Society

By Mike Burke Staff Writer TOMS RIVER – Glitz and glamour remained low key and charity took center stage for “The Event” yesterday, a fund-raising gala that organizers said raised some $50,000 for the American Cancer Society Ocean Unit.

The 17-room English colonial mansion of Scott Chinery provided the backdrop for a crowd of about 700.

Guests paid as much as $100 per ticket to enter the grounds, eat the barbecue fare prepared by Creative Catering, Brick, and hobnob with such celebrities as actress Audrey Landers, formerly of the television show “Dallas,” and Lynn Rasiewicz, Mrs. New Jersey.

“We expect that we will see close to $50,000 as a result of ‘The Event,'” said Linda Reilly, an American Cancer Society volunteer who served as chairwoman of the function. “We had at least 700 guests and a staff of close to 100 volunteers to keep things running smoothly.”

Chinery in addition to donating the use of his house and grounds for the soiree, gave the cancer association a check for $5,000.

“Cancer is just about the worst word in the whole world,” Chinery said as he presented the check. “It takes away our mothers and fathers.”

He told the crowd that he nearly lost his mother to the disease 10 years ago and motioned to her fitting out there with tears in her eyes.”

“We care about each other an our children’s future,” he noted. ” think we proved that here today.” ‘ Rasiewicz, a resident of Jackson,’, said she called Chinery to volunteer her appearance at the fund-raiser.

“One thing I believe in very strongly is giving to charitable causes,” Rasiewicz said. The cancer society, she added, can “really make a difference in people’s lives.”

Guests roamed the grounds viewing Chinery’s collection of cars, including one of the original Batmobiles and the Bat Cycle used in the “Batman” television series.

Inside the house, a Chinery’s extensive collection of guitars and antique watches were displayed.

Comedians and musicians entertained and the crew from Creative Catering, a family business begun some six years ago by Marie Lisa Gialanella, barbecued chicken, London Broil and ribs.

Reilly said the Ocean Unit of the American Cancer Society last year provided patient services to more than 2,000 cancer patients .

    Dear Steve,

My husband and I have been receiving rare reviews about the food and help that you supplied for our daughters’ Christening Party on March 25, 1995. Everything was delicious and Mary saw to it that everything was served fresh and hot. Both Mary and Sonny worked non stop while they were here.

We especially liked the presentation of the crudités and crackers aced cheese. All in all we were very happy with the service you provided; we wouldn’t hesitate to call you again. And you were right about the food there was plenty

  • We want to thank you for catering our Adult Evening School graduation ceremony on May 31St. The food was quite delicious and plentiful and displayed so beautifully.

Your entire staff is to be congratulated on a job well done. As with last year’s graduation, we received so many compliments from many of the attendees.

Thank you all again for your efforts – they were very much appreciated!

  • Dear John & Stephen,

The Bridal Shower for our Daughter was one I shall always remember thanks to you and your wonderful staff. We couldn’t be more pleased, from your presentation, to the quality of the food and preparation thereof and to the gracious serving of the food.
May your company thrive and bring pleasure to many people in the future. I shall certainly sing your praises. Again many thanks for a successful party.

  • Kris, Bill & Stephanie says:

    Dear John and Steve,

Thank you very much for the delicious food and wonderful barbecue you provided for our daughter’s first communion party. The 6 foot grill was a great idea and Sonny and Mary were very nice and fantastic helpers!! It was a great feeling knowing that we didn’t have to set up and prepare that food on our daughter’s special day. With Sonny and Mary there, we were able to socialize and enjoy the day. Please commend them on their wonderful, professional service.

We look forward to using Creative Catering again for our next function!

    Thank you again!!

  • Val & Steve says:

  • Dear John and Steve,

Thank you for the great food and exceptional service you provided at my dinner party. You’re team played a major part in making my party a huge success. Of the numerous parties you catered for me, this one was the best. The appetizers and dessert were a big hit. I wanted to take this time to not only thank you, but to commend the team lead that night. She was the BEST! She made sure everything was organized and had the best personality. She was always smiling and was extremely attentive to my requests. Numerous guests complimented me on hiring such a great staff.

Please tell her to forgive me for not remembering her name and to accept this check ($25) as an additional tip for that evening. (Just to make sure we are referring to the same girl, she was thin, very pretty with long curly black hair and a big smile).

I didn’t want to tip her more that the rest of your crew that evening. I didn’t think it would have been proper in front of them.

If you need a reference, please do not hesitate to contact me.
